The generator load test: why it's essential

2026-06-11

A lot of people 'test' their generator by running it for a minute with nothing connected. That doesn't prove it will work in a real blackout.

What the load test proves

Connecting a real load (a load bank or the installation) confirms that the set delivers its rated power, that voltage and frequency regulation are correct and that there are no faults under stress.

Wet stacking

Diesel engines that run for long periods without load build up unburnt fuel in the exhaust (wet stacking), which damages the engine. The load test prevents and clears it.
