Marine engine overheating: causes and solutions

2026-06-13

If the temperature spikes, stop the engine: pressing on wrecks cylinder head gaskets and liners. These are the causes, from the most likely to the most serious.

1. Lack of cooling water

A clogged water filter, a closed seacock or an air lock. The first thing to check.

2. Worn impeller

If not enough water is getting in, check the impeller: the blades break or lose their flexibility.

3. Heat exchanger and thermostat

The heat exchanger scales up; the thermostat can stick closed. Both restrict cooling.
