MAN i6-730 turbo: failure symptoms and when to replace it

The turbocharger is one of the parts that takes the most punishment on the MAN i6-730. Spotting its wear in time prevents more serious engine damage.

Typical symptoms

• Power loss and sluggish throttle response.
• Bluish smoke (burning oil) or black smoke (rich mixture).
• A rising, high-pitched whistle or squeal.
• High oil consumption and play in the turbo shaft.

Recondition or replace?

If there is noticeable radial play in the shaft or the turbines are damaged, the safe option is to replace it with a reconditioned, bench-tested unit. A turbo that bleeds oil into the engine can cause a dangerous runaway.
